Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance and The Role of the Board
Overview of Learning
In schools and academies, the governing or trust body should, through their operational leaders, have a strategic careers plan that meets the legal or contractual requirements of the school or academy. The plan should be developed in line with the Gatsby Benchmarks and informed by the requirements and expectations set out in this statutory guidance for ‘Careers guidance and access for education and training providers 2021’.
This plan should show how the careers programme will be implemented and how its impact will be measured. Every school and college should have a member of their governing body who takes a strategic interest in careers education and guidance and encourages employer engagement – The CIAG Governance Lead.
All boards have a crucial role to play in connecting their school with the wider community of business and other professional people in order to enhance the education and career aspirations of pupils.
Boards are encouraged to have a nominated individual who takes a strategic interest in careers education and guidance and encourages employer engagement, which may in turn potentially lead to employers providing new, skilled individuals to serve on the board. Boards should engage with their Careers & Enterprise Company Enterprise Adviser (where appointed), who can help the school to develop its careers programme and to broker relationships between employers and the school.
This session aims to discuss the role of the Board in CIAG and in particular the role of the CIAG Governance Lead.
