Governance Workshop: Self Review and Effective Action Planning for Improvement

Overview of Learning

Boards should regularly evaluate their own effectiveness and carry out regular audits of the skills they possess in relation to their governance roles and responsibilities.

This workshop provides guidance to boards on how to conduct skills audits and how to use the findings of these to compile training and development plans for individuals and the board and steer recruitment activities.

The session also provides support for boards to conduct a self-review exercise using the NGA governing board/ MAT governance self-evaluation questions. Advice is provided on how to use the findings of these to compile an action plan using a template which is provided to delegates during the session. By the end of this session, you will:

  • understand how to conduct a skills audit with the board and formulate training and development plans from the findings.
  • understand how to conduct a self-review exercise using the NGA evaluation questions for governing boards/ MATs.
  • from analysis of the findings of a self-review exercise, be able to identify priorities for improvement and produce an action plan for the board.

As this is a practical workshop, delegates will be asked to bring to the session the findings of any recent skills audits and/ or self-review exercises they have conducted with their boards. These should be anonymised and can be referred to and reflected upon during the workshop. Delegates will receive an email containing guidance and instructions ahead of the session.
